Food

It doesn’t matter the mood, the time or the ambience – for a small area the Whitsundays has a little of everything (even all-day breakfasts) at unbelievably reasonable prices compared to the major cities.

The ambience of in- and out-of town establishments is diverse, from no-frills take-away, casual or family oriented restaurants to delightfully informal but up market romantic restaurants.

There's dinner with a view, breakfast under an umbrella, a picnic lunch on a beach (to which you have been flown) or lunch at five-star Hayman while rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. Several restaurants offer live entertainment and bars, some open till the small hours.

The kids will enjoy eating out too - and there is a choice. How about a swim and an early evening meal in Airlie Beach or Cannonvale while you enjoy a pre-dinner drink? The pubs and some restaurants offer children's servings at reduced prices.

Night Life

Night life in the Whitsundays can mean possums rustling in the trees outside your window, or the splendour of a diamond studded southern sky seen from the water or, from the serene to the extreme, a wild night of clubbing.

By all means have an early night to get the most from a cruise with an early morning departure, but a quiet night at your accommodation need not be the rule. First are sundowners at various local bars and restaurants, where an impressive cocktail or dry gin will get you in the mood.

Or on a twilight cruise, take in a fabulous sunset and the twinkling lights of Airlie Beach through the bubbles in your glass. Next stop is one of the many restaurants all offering something unique and delicious. If you feel like kicking on after dinner, Airlie Beach turns on a party every night at its bars, pubs and clubs in the main street.

Do be aware that Queensland state laws prohibits consuming alcohol in public places. Cinema and live shows are also possibilities. And if you are fortunate to be on holiday in early to mid-November during Reef Festival or on New Year's Eve, the fireworks over the water will add to your happy memories of Whitsunday nights.

For something completely different, the Hawaiian Fire Dinner Show at Coral Sea Resort is not to be missed.
